Ok, so apart from the fact that this fruity art made me giggle and smile as I imagined people sneaking off with apples, watermelon seeds and peach peels during the exhibition, it also gave a sensational burst to my creativity. The idea of developing minimalist art from everyday fruits that we all touch, come to contact with, and know so well, is a quirky one that brings the viewer into more of a comfort zone with the art.
What I appreciate the most is not simply the unique approach of using fruit to create art, but the geometric studies coming out of the exercise. I have never entertained the idea of a round apple as the corner of a square, or straight-edge-chopped apples making a circle.
Artist Sakir Gokcebag does more than fulfill our childlike need of giggling at sticky fruit, he sets our sophisticated sense of perception and form into question and intrigue as we revel at the simplicity with which he's managed to turn not only our understanding of fruit, but also our understanding of art, into a totally new direction.
